Celebrating Rumi at Michigan State University

On Nov. 3rd, Michigan State University will host a one day conference on Rumi, the 13th century spritual poet and philosopher. The conference will be followed by poetry reading, Whirling Dervishes and traditional Sufi music. Coleman Barks, one of the most successful translators of Rumi’s work in the United States, will read Rumi’s poetry with accompanying musicians.Rumi’s poetry combines anecdot es from everyday life with deep emotional and spiritual longings to show us a world in which there are no boundaries between the body and the spirit − and between people of different races and creeds. In light of UNESCO’s decision to celebrate Rumi in 2007, numerous celebrations are planned throughout the world, and this event will help to preserve this rich cultural tradition − a vital alternative vision for people seeking to live together peacefully..Both the conference and the cultural event are free and open to all.
