Great Lakes Ottoman Workshop (GLOW) 2007
[ 21-22 April 2007 ]
The Great Lakes Ottoman Workshop (GLOW) was conceived as an open, informal venue for scholars and students in Ottoman studies in the Midwest and beyond, to come together, and discuss current projects, dissertation chapters, articles in progress, and the like, in a workshop-like format, once or twice a year.
The first GLOW was held at Northwestern University in March 2005, the second at DePaul University in September 2005, the third at the University of Toronto in March 2006. While the first versions featured six and five presentations respectively, the last one brought together about thirty participants, featuring a total of fifteen papers and a keynote address.
In continuing the GLOW project, the University of Michigan (UM) was an obvious choice for a venue, situated in the middle of the constituency which stretches from Chicago to Toronto, including Indiana, Cincinnati, and OSU. Additionally, it is a university with several faculty members in the field, and a considerable cohort of graduate students working on pertinent projects.
This two-day workshop is scheduled to take place at the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School (915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor, MI, 48109-1070). MAP
At present, there will be no formal registration for this workshop.
However, if you would like to confirm your attendance, please send us an email at cmenas 'AT' [cmenas@umich.edu]
The workshop schedule is forthcoming, please visit the GLOW website for the latest information.

Iklimler / Climates - Detroit Film Theatre
[ 23, 24 & 25 March 2007 ]
TACAM would like to announce a special Turkish movie presented at the
Detroit Film Theatre of the DIA. The
film will have three viewings starting March
23rd. Please support the Detroit Film
Theatre by attending this movie @ the DIA.
Iklimler/Climates -
(Turkey/France/2006) directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan
During a sweltering summer vacation on the Aegean coast, the relationship between a middle-aged professor, Isa (superbly played by the film’s director) and his younger, TV-producer girlfriend Bahar (Ebru Ceylan) brutally implodes. She leaves him, returning to Istanbul, where she rekindles a torrid affair with a previous lover. Before long, however, Isa embarks upon an arduous journey—both physically and emotionally daunting—in a desperate attempt to win her back. Amazingly nuanced performances combine with breathtaking cinematography to create one of the year’s most powerful and memorable portraits of the fragility and complexity of human relationships. Winner of the prestigious Fipresci Award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. In Turkish with English subtitles. (97 min.)
Fri. & Sat. at 7:00 / Sun. at 4:00 & 7:00
“Breathtaking and exquisitely observed. One of the finest films at Cannes.” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

[ 23 January 2007 ]
TACAM has created a Memorial Fund in honor of one of its Founders, Dr. Baha Önder. Dr. Önder was one of six visionaries setting the foundation of TACAM back in 1972. His legacy and vision will live on in future Turkish American generations.

He was one of the founding partners of Farmington Family Physicians, a practice that continues to serve the community today. Funeral Information
[ Document ]
We never know when one of us will die, including ourselves. So usually we are not prepared for this important time. When our relatives or friends die, it is very hard to deal with the funeral details while we are saddened by our loss. It can be especially hard for Turks/ Turkish-Americans to deal with this since there are many different tasks and considerations. There can be governmental, cultural and possible religious or transportation (to Turkey) issues. All of these can be very complicated while we are mourning for the loved one.
For the reasons mentioned above TACAM decided it might be helpful to members to collect and organize information on this subject.
